I did a 6 hour cleaning of me system. Started with a PBW bath, then rinse, then an Acid #5 wash (if that is the right version, I used the higher ratio of acid to water - I think the other option is a rinse), followed by a flush per instructions and closed out with a StarSan sanitation. Part of the issue is that it has been a while since I brewed (long story, but a bout of unemployment followed up by a new job for less pay and a large DC commute takes it toll). In preparation to do something, anything, I got down and did the tear down, scrub, reassemble and CIP (in name only for this).

The result is a glowing system, but the side bar is that I saw all manner of crap flow out of the system. I was filtering the flow with a grain bag to catch. I suspect that the culprit is the plate chiller and the solution was such a substantial circulation.

Wow Hop, nice job on the cleaning day.
I am sorry to hear that circumstances have changed with work and it makes it tougher to make time to brew.
It sounds like you may be back to it soon.
I hope you do.

Any beers you plan on making in 2014?

Hints on where you can get the Acid Cleaner #5?

Local microbrewery just closed - no more access. AHS doesn't carry it - so looks like I have to have it shipped - a bit scary given the gallon sizes and shipping costs.

I buy @ the gallon size. We work it into our grain buys as we can spread the shipping cost over the pallets of grain. All the chemicals are a lot cheaper by the gallon. I get PBW in a bucket. Not sure how much it weights, but it is heavy as hell and cheap as dirt that way. Last forever too.
