Gaskets

Post by Silver_Ant » Mon Apr 18, 2016 7:05 pm

Is everyone still using BUNA gaskets on their brew stands?

Since I bought my system used, most of these were looking fairly uhhh... used... I had to peel and scrape out the gasket that was in the BK that attached the dip tube. That connection was a disaster to get cleaned up...

After the initial survey, I ended up changing everything over to PTFE. I really like that I can loosen a clamp and rotate the connection without causing damage to the gaskets (just like the racking arm of the fermenter)

I did the same thing with the thermometer, as the silicone gaskets were all gummed up and hard to pull out of the fitting interfaces.

Buna is much more sturdy than the other gaskets, although the hard Teflon gaskets are good. Then just leak more. The issue is sheer forces where some of the stainless plumbing is pulling down - deforming the connection. Make sure to connect straight on - lifting if you need and tightening the TC before letting go.

The silicon gaskets are nice, but cannot survive the sheering at all.
